The Art of Writing: Show Or Tell?

Image
When writing, there are a number of varying thoughts about how to build your story. One of the more commonly discussed topics I have come across is the Show vs Tell debate. Let's describe this a bit shall we? In writing, practitioners of the Tell   school believe that an author (that's you, by the way) should focus on simply stating what is going on in a scene. When Telling,  the author focuses less on the description surrounding an event and focuses more simply stating that the event happened. An example of a * Telling * sentence is: The dog bit the boy On the other hand, practitioners of the  Show  school believe that an author should focus on creating very descriptive sentences and paragraphs in order to pass along a graphic representation of an event. In Showing  sentences, the author focuses more on describing how the event happened. An example of a Showing  sentence is: In a gory display of animalistic aggression, the enraged dog tore a ...

"It's Just Writing"

Image
Now that's offensive. There's a reason people go out of their way to find means to pay people for these "simple" tasks and services. Everyone respects engineers, pilots, chefs, bakers; heck, they respect TikTok content creators (no disrespect intended). But what does the stereotype have to say about people who sit in dark rooms to pour their hearts on parchment and digital paper?  "It's just a bunch of words", "even AI can do it", "it's just to copy and paste", "just do ten thousand words a week", "it's just  writing".  And this goes for everyone that spits creativity. Even if it's crayons. Where are my pen lovers? Don't try to explain the mental stress that comes with attempting to do something so outstanding that it gains zero attention. Do your thing and let them be but by all means, if they so much as equate it to a negative "God abeg" situation, you are free to creatively terminate t...

How Dare You Not Recognize Me?

* Dusts cobwebs...* *Unpacks equipment...* * Insert brief power failure in the process of grabbing a snack...* Hi everyone. Lady Dia here, how's it been? Welcome to another piece of A Writer's Tale. So happy you could stick around because so much has been going on but we're going to be alright. This time I shall be addressing a disturbance that goes on in the head of anyone and everyone who happens to be good at anything. Since we're dealing with the writing craft, I'll use that in this piece. However, I'd like to remind you all that everyone has their own form of art. Now where was I...? You go online at random after zoning out and catch up with the latest trending issues, shaking your head and commenting as at when due when all of a sudden – an idea pops into your mind! You scout the vicinity for a chance to document that bright idea then someone walks up to you and goes, "Hey, what are you writing?" And that, dear reader, is the end of the joy of th...

Read of The Week #2

Image
Alright. Before you yell at me for being dreadfully late I just have one thing to say: Please forgive? Really though: work has been an absolute pain over the past couple of weeks, all the way up to this past week which I thought  would be a week to catch up on my writing but which just devolved into a rush of even more  work. Ugh. Still, I'm back! And we can get on with this week's RotW! So, let's get into it. If the words 'Millenium Falcon' ring a bell to you'll be interested in what I've got coming. If the word 'Chewie' brings up images of a large, hairy, lovable creature (and not a dog's chew toy) then I'm pretty sure I've got your attention. If the name 'Solo' stories chords of rougish adventure in your heart... Okay, fine,  I'll get along with it.🙄😏 My pick for RotW #2 is Ann C. Crispin's Star Wars: The Han Solo Trilogy. Fans of the Star Wars franchise know about the charming rogue/pilot/smuggler but these trio of L...

The Quest

Image
The quest for... what? Maybe it's a bit of inspiration. It usually is. You get past wondering whether you should or should not put yourself out there, and when you eventually do, you regret it almost immediately because you feel that you are probably never going to get the result you so desire because of the feeling of inadequacy. Maybe it's solace. It could be. Perhaps a quest to create a world in which you have a say? You can spin a tale or two in many directions as you direct the outcome of the life you breathe into your new world. Could that be it? Or could it be the thirst for a means of expression? Wanna know what's really important? Of course, you do. The answer to that one lies solely with you. Why do you want to write? What about? To achieve what? What's your trigger? How much are you willing to invest in this? The quest of being is one many find most difficult at the initial stage of things. The art of birthing a concept; stems from something you need to find ...

No Ink, No Love

Image
And it's Valen- time ? (Sue me, I didn't feel like writing in full). The season of love has officially come to bear its full weight and the numerous excited screams throughout the night on my end are more than enough to prove it. Well, as the lovable person that I undoubtedly am, I thought, "why don't I do something extra weird?" But "weird" would be a tad inappropriate. Something more meaningful should suffice so, I am going to leave you all with a nice little digital ink stain of mine. Let me know when you get it. Please, enjoy. In the dark of night Lying in my birthday suit You're wrath, a  fright. Laid (me) in my birthday  suit. Guilt piled so  high, Painted on my birthday  suit. I plead, I sigh, Lying in my birthday suit. The pain, I deny, Lying in my birthday suit. Loving things, making me cry, Wailing in my birthday suit. I grew, I groaned, Lying in my birthday suit. Was stretched and pulled, Lying in my birthday suit. I wailed and moaned, Lyi...

Read of the Week #01

Image
So... Yeah, this was supposed to start off later this weekend (I was initially aiming for a Saturday night kickoff, so to speak) but then it just hit me outta the blue: It's Valentine's Day! Should I really let this chance slip past? Not even one little romance themed story for the season? Nah. So, with that in mind, let's kick Read of the Week off with some love themed books to immerse yourself into! Lovers for Life We'll start off with my pick for the more generic 'romantic' stories. For the more classical 'novel readers' out there, my pick for this year is Nora Roberts' Tribute . It's a powerful story of legacy, secrets, finding one's place and, of course, love.  Tribute is a personal favorite of mine even amongst Nora Roberts' library of works. In fact, not only do I admire the character of Ford Sawyer, I had a bit of a crush on Cilla (and yes, I thought up entire plotlines for Brid, too!) If you're a fan of contemporary romance, ...
