Read of The Week #2
Alright. Before you yell at me for being dreadfully late I just have one thing to say:
Please forgive?
Really though: work has been an absolute pain over the past couple of weeks, all the way up to this past week which I thought would be a week to catch up on my writing but which just devolved into a rush of even more work.
Ugh.
Still, I'm back! And we can get on with this week's RotW! So, let's get into it.
If the words 'Millenium Falcon' ring a bell to you'll be interested in what I've got coming.
If the word 'Chewie' brings up images of a large, hairy, lovable creature (and not a dog's chew toy) then I'm pretty sure I've got your attention.
If the name 'Solo' stories chords of rougish adventure in your heart...
Okay, fine, I'll get along with it.🙄😏
My pick for RotW #2 is Ann C. Crispin's Star Wars: The Han Solo Trilogy.
Fans of the Star Wars franchise know about the charming rogue/pilot/smuggler but these trio of Legends lore delve deeply into the events that shaped the Man behind the Kessel Run mythos.
After kicking off with his childhood and first love in The Paradise Snare, the story swerves into the tale of the Smuggler and his life with the infamous Desilijic crime boss, Jabba the Hutt in The Hutt Gambit before rounding off (and neatly tucking itself into the events of Star Wars IV: A New Hope) with the thrilling climax of Rebel Dawn.
Though considered non-canonical now, thanks to Disney's ownership of the overall franchise, the Han Solo Trilogy is one of the best origin stories I've read for an an existing character (especially considering that, per Ann Crispin's words, the idea for the book came about as a result of just one line from the character). It's got all the good stuff too, from suspense-filled action scenes to heartache inducing breakups and more than three hair-raising flight sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat -and will keep me hoping that Disney decide to turn these literary masterpieces into live action shows.
